Third generation of mobile telephony – 3G technology, or third generations of radio transmission technologies (RTTs) - follows previous two generations of mobile telephony and it is representing standards in mobile telecommunication services satisfying IMT 2000 terms set by the International Communication Union (ICU). It means that 3G technology can provide: conference calls, complex internet access, superior video calls, IPTV, global rooming and transfer rate up to 144 Kbps (kilobits per second) for walking users and stationary and up to 384 Kbps in any moving vehicle.
Best way to explain how 3G technology is advanced compare to previous generations, is to remind you about how it has all started. First mobile communication started with so called simplex way of communicating and that is how walkie-talkie is functioning. Only one person can speak at the time while pressing the button. That is because walkie-talkie is using only one frequency for communication. Mobile phones are providing two ways transfer of data (persons can speak at the same time, for example – if they want, without pressing any buttons) and this is called duplex. Multiplex is when your mobile phone can allow you to transmit more than two data streams. Complete process of how 3G technology is functioning is complex but very efficient.
At this moment use of 3G is wide spread all over the world. The whole process of implementing this way of communications is slow because the costs it is bringing on. All mobile telephony operators, due to the fact that different kind of system is required to support 3G than 2G, must apply for special licences in their own countries. Fees and taxes are really expensive and that is something that was keeping this way of progress in communication field to grow faster. For example, first introduction of 3G technologies was in Japan in 2001, in Europe commercial 3G started in 2003, in China 2008, in Canada 2005, Middle East in 2007 and Turkey in 2009. These are just few examples to show how the market of 3G is developing.

3G is coming more and more to our lives. You can easily see it in an internet shopping and e-commerce, interactive computer games or e-banking. For people who are on a road a lot, and due to work spend their live travelling – this technology is opening numerous possibilities. While on the bus or train, you can make a booking for your next vacation, checking the maps of the exact spot that you would like to visit make a video call to the hotel receptionist and ask for additional information... The field of use of 3G technology is very wide.
